This article from Reuters makes the case that Facebook could become the next e-commerce giant. It’s an interesting argument but we think that this is not possible, simply because it requires a completely different approach to be a successful e-commerce company, and a successful social networking company. Usually when large organizations tend to drift away from their core competencies, there’s a higher likelihood that they might fail. Social networking is Facebook’s core competency and they should stick to improving and strengthening that. What facebook can explore is bringing in the social aspect in shopping (which it tried and failed), but that doesn’t mean this social networking giant won’t try again.
